This report contained excellent information about weighing the risks of not taking anti-depressant medication during pregnancy, with the small risk that 2 in 10,000 babies could be born with a birth defect if medication is taken or continued. The FDA thought 2/10,000 was a tolerable risk. Given the threat to a baby's life when the mother has post-partum depression, I would wonder if continuing anti-depressants before, during, and after pregnancy wouldn't have a beneficial effect. However, as depression is such an individual disease, patients should make decisions only after consultation with their doctors.
