I was routed to this organization when I placed a call to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. I am a non-veteran American living overseas. I was in need of help and a referral to any organization that can assist me in getting medical assistance and/or counseling for long term depression. The telephone "counselor" told me that no one can help me if I am overseas, and if I am not immediately suicidal there was nothing they could do for me. She suggested that I look in the yellow pages for a local counselor. I explained that dealing with this in a foreign language is too much for me right now. She suggested I find a translator to help with that. She also told me that because I was not immediately suicidal there was nothing she could do for me and had no resources to point me to. I asked if she was saying I needed to deal with this on my own and she said yes. Then she said she needed to end the call. My total time on the phone with this organization was less than five minutes. I get the impression that their operators are very young, and not adequately trained to deal with anything that is not on their checklist. What I was told by this operator, and the dismissive way it was delivered, has made my own situation feel more hopeless than it did before I placed the call. I am stunned. I have suffered from depression all my life. This was the first time I felt my mood and situation was serious enough to place a call to a helpline. What the operator at this orginazation told me today was the last thing I needed to hear at the moment when I felt the need to reach out and ask for help. I wish I'd never placed the call.
